Research has shown hypnotherapy to be effective with the following disorders:
- Depression
- Anxiety, panic phobia
- Somatoform disorders, Conversion disorder
- Dissociative disorders
Hypnosis can be used for the following disorders with mixed success:
- Smoking
- Weight loss
- Sleep disorder
- Sexual dysfunction
- Substance dependence/abuse
With habits, results are depended on the overall lifestyle change. Other things which are important include compliance with the program, relapse prevention, and self-monitoring.
When not to use hypnosis:
- During the first visit
- Just for the sake of using it
- Things not familiar with
- Low motivation/low hypnotizability
- Organic brain conditions (such as damage to memory areas of the brain, injury to the hippocampus or related structure)
- Cluster C disorders
