There are Many Types of Loss
We grieve them all in different ways. Most people think of loss associated with a death. However, there are many other types of loss that can impact you as intensely as death.
Some other types of loss are:
- Divorce or break up of a relationship.
- Loss of a family pet.
- Loss of a job.
- Loss of reputation, status or income.
- Loss of negative habit (smoking, alcohol, drugs, compulsion)
The way we grieve different types of losses have subtle differences. However, the impact on us is very similar. We miss the thing we lost. We feel the pain and emptiness due to the loss. These different types of loss change our life. Our purpose associated with the loss changes. We crave things to go back to the way they were. We feel a variety of emotions associated with this loss. We can feel anger, emptiness, depression and a variety of other emotions.
This is grief and loss. The main concern about grief is getting stuck in an area of grief. There isn’t a specific time frame in which you are expected to get through phases of grief. People make assumptions on when people should get through grief. It’s important to allow people their amount of time to grieve.
